Introduction

The project aims to re-design and construct a portable wireless system which can measure rotation speed of a certain object. As this is a follow-up project, the improvements of the current system have been focused for the project. The device is composed of dual antennas, two partially reflecting surface (PRS) structure, copper plate, an absorber, and Arduino UNO Board with software.

Motivation

The rotation speed measurement device has already been used in various industries. The most commonly used speed measurement device uses an optical frequency range between 1 THz and 700 THz. However, they cannot work if there is an obstacle between the testing device and rotating objects. Hence, we introduced using radio frequency (2.45 GHz) to resolve this limitation of working condition, as RF can penetrate obstacles except for metal components, so that measuring the rotating speed can be possible under sophisticated circumstances such as fog or smoke.

Objective

• Designing and fabricating Partially Reflecting Surface (PRS) above patch antenna with Electronic Band Gap (EBG) to increase directivity and gain, so that the operating distance can be increased.

• Designing and fabricating a tapered patch absorber which can distinguish the reflected angle at the resonance frequency, so that the 180 º ambiguity of the reflected wave can be resolved
